Common Household Insects

In the United Kingdom, a diverse array of insects thrives, each with distinct characteristics and behaviours. Understanding these common household pests can help you take effective preventative measures. I have put together a chart outlining the most prevalent insects found in homes. For each insect, you’ll find information on its unique physical traits, habits, and the type of conditions that can attract it to your living space. This knowledge can empower you to recognize potential infestations early and implement strategies to help keep your home insect-free.

Know Your Insects Chart

Did you know there are different types of midges? There’s the biting ones, such as the Scottish midge mentioned above, or non-biting ones such as ‘lake flies’ that are just a nuisance. There are over 35 different types of biting midges within the UK and most can be located up in Scotland!

If you are having problems with non-biting midges or regular insects, then our flyscreens can help! Made with a 18×16 gauge fibreglass mesh, they stop them in their tracks. Check out our flyscreens here.
Issues with Scottish or biting midges? Some of our flyscreens can be made with midge mesh instead, such as the Magnetic Insect Screen. We recommend the midge mesh for Scottish or biting midges purely because they will seek a way to you and could crawl through our standard fibreglass mesh if they were determined enough. Non-biting midges are not that fussed, and usually fly in another direction when they come across an obstacle.
