Types of Mesh

Types of Mesh

There are several high-quality types of mesh options available on the UK market. I’ve identified the most popular five choices and provided clear explanations of each one — covering what they are, their functions, and how to effectively use them.

Fibreglass MeshTypes of Mesh - Midge mesh vs fibreglass meshFibreglass Type Mesh

Quite possibly the most popular type of mesh, this mesh is made using a process called fibreglass weaving. It involves creating fibres from melted glass that are then pulled through a machine to create individual fibres. This mesh type is coated with PVC to protect it from UV rays and moisture.

Our standard insect mesh features an 18×16 gauge weave, designed to effectively keep out various insects, including bees, wasps, large spiders, flies, ladybirds, mosquitoes, and moths. For areas where smaller insects, such as midges, are prevalent — like parts of Scotland and the UK — we recommend using midge mesh, which has a tighter weave of 30×20.

It is lightweight, durable, and flexible. Making it ideal for applications such as flyscreens, soffits, vents, shading, and more. It depends on what you wish to use it for, as there are different types of mesh for different projects.

Fibreglass mesh is easy to install as well. Simply cut to the size needed and secure into place using clips or adhesive. Then use a staple gun, nails or screws. You can then seal the edges using silicone, which will prevent moisture or insects from creeping through.

This type of mesh can also be recycled – but only in certain areas! It is either ground down into a powder or melted once more to transform it into something else. Check with your local recycling centre to see if it something they can do.

Polyester Suntex Meshpolyester suntex mesh

Polyester Suntex mesh is a high-quality material crafted from durable vinyl-coated polyester, ensuring exceptional resistance to mildew growth and fading from sunlight exposure. This heavy-duty mesh is designed with a tightly woven structure featuring a gauge of 17×14, effectively blocking both heat and harmful UV rays emitted by the sun.

The breathable nature of the screen serves multiple functions: it not only keeps insects at bay but also plays a significant role in keeping cooler indoor environments, which can lead to increased comfort and energy savings. Additionally, it protects furniture from sun damage, which helps to preserve the aesthetic and longevity of your belongings while enhancing privacy in your space.

Moreover, this mesh is built to withstand wear and tear, making it resistant to ripping and damage from small pets that may be prone to clawing or scratching. We specifically use this robust mesh material for our Commercial Insect Panel Curtains due to its remarkable durability and toughness, which make it an ideal choice for high-traffic areas where frequent use is expected.

This mesh is installed the same way as fibreglass mesh – cut to size, stick into place and then staple, nail or screw into position. Then you can seal the edges with silicone if you’d like, to stop any insects or moisture creeping in.

Aluminium Mesh

Aluminium mesh boasts an incredibly lightweight and flexible design, making it highly adaptable for a variety of applications. This mesh often comes with a black epoxy resin coating, which not only provides robust protection against the elements but also enhances its aesthetic appeal by allowing it to blend seamlessly with its surroundings.

It is suitable for residential applications like soffits, cladding, vents, and more. Additionally, it can be used for HVAC applications, filtration, and architectural purposes in the industrial sector. Its versatility allows for easy shaping, ensuring it can fit snugly into diverse architectural features.

To install, you need a shape pair of scissors or utility knife that can make clean cuts. You run the risk of the mesh fraying if not! Then use fasteners such as staple or adhesive to secure into place.

Stainless Steel Mesh

stainless steel mesh Introducing a robust insect mesh designed for exceptional durability and reliability. This heavy-duty mesh is constructed using a thicker gauge of wire, which significantly enhances its overall strength and resilience. Manufactured from premium-quality 304 stainless steel, it boasts outstanding resistance to rust and corrosion, ensuring long-lasting performance even in challenging environments.

This type of mesh has a wide variety of applications, from flyscreens, fencing, filtration and even decoration! It is strong enough that it could be used in by domestic customers for enclosures for small animals or by commercial clients in food processing equipment. The options are endless.

To install stainless steel mesh, you will need wire cutters and pliers – it can be very sharp once cut so you may want to wear gloves. Measure out the amount of mesh needed and then carefully cut. Attach with the same methods as above, using pliers if needed, and seal using silicone.

Rodent Proof MeshRodent Mesh

This mesh is made from strong, durable materials such as stainless steel or galvanized steel and is specifically designed to keep rodents out. Rodents are known for their persistent chewing habits, but when installed correctly, this mesh is resistant to gnawing. A humane alternative to traps, this mesh helps prevent the spread of diseases by deterring rodents from entering or chewing through these openings.

It can be used to seal holes, gaps, and vents and can be installed around pipes, electrical wiring, and other potential entry points for rodents.

We sell both 10×10 gauge and 12×12 gauge, depending on what you need it for. To install, you will need wire cutters and gloves – again, it can be very sharp once cut. Simply measure, cut to shape and attach using staples or nails. Place the staples/nails at equal intervals, ensuring the mesh is taut and there’s no chance of any rodents sneaking through. Finally, apply sealant around the edges. This not only stops moisture, but stops rodents being able to grab and bend the edge of the mesh.
