It’s that time of year again when those pesky bugs start to appear. Let’s chat about how to keep our flyscreens in great shape. It is a straightforward task that can extend their lifespan and maintain effectiveness. The best times to perform maintenance are at the end of winter on a sunny day or after summer when flies are less bothersome, and you are less likely to need the screens.
It’s advisable to clean a flyscreen while it is still installed, as it helps minimise wear and tear. Frequent removal of the screen can risk fraying of the mesh and increases the risk of damaging or warping the screen itself when it’s handled.
To begin, open the window or door to which the flyscreen is attached. Prepare a gentle cleaning solution using warm water and soap, and grab a non-abrasive soft brush or microfibre cloth. Carefully scrub the surface of the flyscreen, paying particular attention to any areas that may have accumulated dirt or debris.
Once you have cleaned the screen, thoroughly rinse it with clean water to remove any soap residue, ensuring no suds remain trapped in the mesh. Finally, allow the flyscreen to air dry completely; placing it in a sunny spot can expedite this process.
If you typically remove the flyscreen for seasonal storage, cleaning it both before taking it down and after reinstalling it is beneficial. This will ensure that it is in optimal condition for the seasons ahead.
Things to Avoid When Cleaning:
– Dishwasher: Do not place the flyscreen in the dishwasher, as the high temperatures can warp or damage the frame and mesh.
– Forced Removal: You should not force the flyscreen into a sink, as this can bend or break the components.
– Abrasive Materials: Avoid using abrasive cleaning materials, such as metal scrubbers, which can scratch or tear the mesh.
– Harsh Chemicals: Steer clear of more potent cleaning products than mild detergent, as these can degrade the flyscreen mesh over time.
